How to be a great Engineering Manager?

Few guidelines to follow:-

  • all team members should have equal access to mentorship
  • promote mentees having other mentorship relationships outside, not limited to their direct managers
  • develop trusted relationships with the engineering leaders
  • engineers and engineering leaders do not like to be told how to do things, they like to figure out things themselves. Tell them what and why, let them figure out the how
  • discuss solutions with engineers, ask what they think and take their feedback
  • measure engineers on productivity as they really like efficiency
  • if someone’s expertise is different than yours, doesn’t mean they are not brilliant and worthy of respect
  • if someone’s priorities are different than yours, doesn’t mean they are not values driven or dedicated
  • form cross functional teams with shared purpose and clear accountability, will help them gain deeper domain knowledge and make them understand business impact of their work
  • enable peer reviews and continuous learning for engineers
